User-Centric Design

Why you need a user centric design

In our previous post, we talked about getting to know your users and audiences better. We hope our tips will able to help you to understand your users better. Now, we will go through the importance of a user-centric design for your website and how it can benefit both your company and your customers.

What is user centricity?

User centricity focuses on the content, design and functionality of the website, creating an interactive experience for the website user. This makes the user feel more relaxed, more personal, and more familiar with the website framework that is presented to him or her. This can come in the form of content articles, backgrounders and educational informational pieces to convince your would-be customers, having a website layout and aesthetic design that is best suited for your users, and customizing interactive behaviors such as drop-down buttons, together with roll over functions to impress your customers.

How does user centricity work?

This all falls down to how the human psychology and behavior works. Many of you might have heard of “Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs” back in your studying days. It is useful in our case where our users require what is stated on the bottom rung of the pyramid, which is just above physiological needs like food, water, and warmth, and that is security and safety.

How exactly do you make your website “safe”?

Well, you have to program your website in a way that your users feel comfortable when navigating through it. Include options and information that addresses and assuages their concerns, such as including FAQ sections, and information about your company. Above the rung of security is the need for social contact. Provide avenues on your website for your users to give their feedback on the website. Remember, try to make these features as fuss-free as possible and not clutter your website with too many options.

Why should you user centralize?

As the saying often goes – the customer is king. In order for your customer to feel at home and important, the website has to be designed to suit that particular persona. We have gone through the concept of personas in our last blog post. A persona – one singular person to represent your user base – should be created. The concept of user centricity is important, as it centers your website around your customer. Ever wondered why you inexplicitly feel safe and secure when surfing certain websites, or feel drawn towards certain websites such as Instagram, or commercial websites like M1 or McDonalds? These websites are all very user centralized, and are designed best to fit their targeted respective personas.

When should you user centralize?

Imagine having a physical storefront with dying plants, gaudy colors, ugly typewriting, and wonky chairs. Would you pay that store a visit? I highly doubt so, even I would never think of doing so too. Your website is very much like your storefront – much like a digital one. A revamp of your website to a user-centric one would very much be akin to a renovation to your digital storefront. Imagine replacing those ugly, gaudy colors and images with a fresh minimalistic design. The usability of your website should be highly interactive and equipped with a simple message for your users to take away. This simple trick would certainly blow the minds of your users, and ultimately – translate to a better user experience for your users.
